Te Henga Walkway

Te Henga Walkway is part of the Hillary Trail network in the Waitākere Ranges and is one of Auckland's most scenic and popular coastal walks. It is a must-do for anyone looking to experience the beauty of the west coast.

The trail runs from Bethells Beach to Muriwai, offering stunning lookout points that overlook the Tasman Sea and the crashing waves on the black sand beaches below. The 10-kilometres-long trail takes approximately 3.5 hours one way, making it a full-day hike if you plan on completing the walk both ways.  

But before you head out on the Te Henga Walkway, come prepared with some snacks, a hat, and sun protection to keep yourself fuelled and protected from the sun (90% of the walk is exposed). And don't forget to bring plenty of water too! That way, you can stay hydrated and energised throughout the walk. 

Begin your adventure from the parking area located across from the Lake Wainamu carpark, which is only a brief distance away from Bethells Road or start from Constable Rd on the Muriwai end. If you don’t want to do the full 10 kilometres walk, arrange for a pick-up, or leave a car at the opposite end of where you begin your trail. 

As you tread the path of Te Henga Walkway, you'll also have the opportunity to explore the captivating O'Neill's Bay, a scenic extension spanning approximately 2 kilometres and rewarding you with its own unique beauty. Allow about 45 minutes each way for this additional excursion.
