In celebration of New Zealand Music Month, join us for a very special edition of our beloved Auckland Town Hall Tours this May, curated by local historian, musician and award-winning author Gareth Shute. Our passionate tour guides are excited to share the wonderful stories and experiences that have shaped the New Zealand music scene: from a mass sing-along in 1922 to New Zealand’s premiere 1950’s jazz singer Mavis Rivers through to Scribe coming on the stage to an unbelievably loud screaming audience during the Aotearoa Hip Hop Summit, and much more. You will walk across the original kauri floors that welcomed some of the biggest names in music including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who and Foo Fighters among others! Along with these stories, you’ll learn the fascinating history of this prominent landmark in neo-Baroque style, from its inception and design in the 1900s to its incredible restoration in the 1990s. Why it is thought to have some of the finest acoustics in the world, how it is the home to the largest musical instrument in Aotearoa, New Zealand – the Auckland Town Hall Organ, and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. Discover the majestic Auckland Town Hall a long-standing icon of our city’s social, political and cultural life that holds many melodic memories in the hearts and minds of Aucklanders, old to young.
