Muriwai

The small coastal community of Muriwai is home to one of New Zealand’s most incredible black-sand beaches, a rugged 60km-long coastline marked by its famous clifftops. You don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy this untamed scenery – breathe in the briny air along the boardwalk, peek at the gannet colony or take a hike into the majestic Muriwai Regional Park.

If you’re visiting between August to March, pop over to say hello to one of three mainland gannet colonies in New Zealand. Observe thousands of nesting birds from several viewing platforms and keep your eyes peeled for chicks toppling over each other for attention.  

To make the most of Muriwai Beach – the beating heart of the area – it's best to make the most of the elements by swimming, surfing or (sort of) sailing. When it’s windy, be sure to watch for the funny yacht-like karts whizzing around the beach. Those are blokarts, a thrilling way to sail around the sand that you can hire by the hour at Muriwai Surf School. You can hire surfboards, bodyboards and wetsuits here, too! Take your beach trip to extraordinary heights (literally) by trekking the beach and nearby Woodhill Forest on horseback – you'll likely spot horse-trekking groups while here.  

In keeping with Muriwai’s laid-back atmosphere, why not have a classic Kiwi camping trip at the Muriwai Beach Campground? As its name suggests, this breezy holiday park is right across from the beach and has a variety of tent sites and cabins to choose from.  

And if you’re a bit of a golf guru, don’t miss the authentic links course at Muriwai Golf Club for black-sand bunkers and the sound of crashing waves nearby. It’s a must! 

Hungry? Go for a tried-and-true spread of fish and chips from Sand Dunz Beach Café or tacos from the pop-up caravan Double Parked. You’ll also find a whole host of fab lunch spots and wineries in Kumeū, only 20 minutes by car. Grab a beer and pizza at the ever-popular Hallertau Brewery or choose a deli-inspired main from the chalkboard menu at The Food Vault.
