Ready for a journey to the top of one of Auckland’s most iconic tūpuna maunga? Maungawhau / Mt Eden stands 143 metres tall and offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the city and beyond. Whether you’re after history, nature, or incredible scenery, Maungawhau has it all.
The name Maungawhau means 'mountain of the whau tree,' and this maunga has been a sacred place for centuries. Its flat terraces and kūmara pits tell the story of its past as a fortified pā, where Māori communities lived and worked. At the summit, you’ll find the deep crater known as Te Ipu-a-Mataaho, named after the god of earthquakes and volcanoes. This sacred area is wāhi tapu, so please stick to the paths and respect its significance.
Maungawhau / Mt Eden’s geological history is just as fascinating—it last erupted around 15,000 years ago, leaving behind the dramatic 50-metre-deep crater, which is now a highlight for visitors. Walk your way around the award winning boardwalk to the tihi (summit) or take the long way. The panoramic views of the city, harbour, and coastline make it well worth the effort!
Before or after your walk, be sure to visit the Te Ipu Kōrero o Maungawhau Visitor Experience Centre, where interactive exhibits and digital displays bring the maunga’s rich history to life. And don’t forget to stop by the Friend & Whau Café for a well-deserved treat after your adventure.
