Karekare Falls is located approximately a 45-60 minute drive from Auckland City, with a fully sealed road for easy access.
To reach Karekare Falls from Auckland, take the road towards Piha. Just before reaching Piha Village, look for the sign indicating 'Karekare' and turn left onto the main road. You have two parking options: turn right into Karekare beach carpark, which includes toilets and a lovely picnic area, or continue straight and park on the left side of the road near the top of the waterfall. The track to the base of the falls begins here.
A straightforward walking trail leads to the lookout point for the falls, a short 5-minute stroll away. Along the way, you'll pass the picturesque Opal Pool Stream Cascade near the trailhead. While the walk is generally easy, there are some stairs at the beginning, making it unsuitable for wheelchairs or strollers. Nevertheless, the scenic views from the trailhead alone make the trip worthwhile, even if you are unable to access the waterfall itself.
