Four genial, al fresco works from great Viennese masters. Brahms’ Variations is such a thoroughly satisfying piece of music that it’s a mere curiosity that its theme is, in fact, almost certainly nots gre by Haydn.
Haydn does however make a genuine appearance, courtesy of one of the Auckland Philharmonia’at friends, Amalia Hall, playing his rarely heard concerto.
Another rarity: Britten’s ingenious arrangement of a movement from Mahler’s enormous Third Symphony for a somewhat smaller band, every note testament to the younger man’s love for Mahler’s music. Schubert’s lovely symphony is a delicious sorbet to finish off.
