Clevedon, affectionately known as “Auckland’s backyard”, is a small community with big heart. Located in one of Auckand’s most fertile regions for crops, it's no wonder Clevedon swells with visitors every Sunday for its famous Clevedon Village Farmers’ Market.
Founded in 2005, the weekly farmers’ market now has more than 60 permanent and seasonal stalls – leaving no two market days the same. Come hungry for freshly picked veggies, artisan pickles and preserves, flowers, scrumptious sauces and farm-to-table nibbles – think bubbly kimchi and homemade buffalo mozzarella. Shoppers can also find arts, quirky gifts and jewellery at the nearby Clevedon Village Market, also open on Sundays.
On any day of the week, wander the picturesque village to find boutique gift shops and much-loved eateries including Hallertau, Auckland’s premier brewery and gastropub. For special gifts, call by the Clevedon Woolshed for quality New Zealand-made products like handmade ceramics to sheepskins.
Over the years Clevedon has become a creative hub with artists and their studios scattered around the village. Take a walking tour of Riverhaven Artland, a sprawling sculpture park and on-site gallery, or meet local artists on the much-anticipated Clevedon Art Trail in January.
Only 35 minutes from the city, Clevedon is an ideal day trip or weekend getaway. Sip on boutique wines at one of the area’s small wineries or dine ‘al fresco’ overlooking the vines. For history buffs, step back into a restored 1800s home at the McNicol Homestead Museum. Want to entertain the kids? Ride a pony or take an animal-filled tour at the Clevedon Animal Farm.
Clevedon, nestled at the edge of several regional parks, is a true gateway to the great outdoors. Drive around the Pōhutukawa Coast, trek into the rugged Hunua Ranges or swim at a sheltered bay at Tāpapakanga Regional Park. Tāpapakanga is home to SPLORE Festival which sees thousands of visitors camping over a weekend to enjoy this popular music festival.
