Is it time to add a little TLC into your schedule? You might be surprised to discover that there are more sanctuaries of relaxation dotted around our city than you expected. So, slide on your slippers (or maybe a sturdier pair of walking shoes), because it’s time to spoil yourself.

1. East Day Spa

Step out of the buzz of the vibrant city and into a sanctuary of calm. For the next few hours, you’re going to feel far, far away from Auckland’s CBD. Whether it’s a bit of self-care or a special treat for two, East Day Spa’s Eastern-style treatments and therapies will help you switch off from the busy outside world.

If it’s to do with wellbeing or beauty, chances are there is a treatment on offer here. For something a little different, step into the tepidarium. This is a purpose-built warm room with stone heated loungers, where even the most tense of muscles will be unable to resist slipping into total relaxation.

Located at The Grand by SkyCity, Auckland’s largest five-star hotel, it’s safe to say that East Day Spa’s treatments meet the world-class standards of discerning globetrotters.

2. Sofitel Spa

Infusing quality French products into their treatments and rituals, the Sofitel Spa is sure to leave you feeling a little bit ooh la la.

Massages, facials, beauty and body treatments are on the menu, with a range of packages also offering up to 3.5 hours of escapism. Better yet, get some friends together for a group booking, then top it off with an indulgent afternoon tea, and a glass of bubbles of course. Do as the French do, we say!

Nestled within the Viaduct Harbour, the Sofitel is a magnificent location for a tranquil retreat from the daily grind.

3. SO/SPA at SO/Auckland

It seems Auckland is not short for beautiful day spas in chic city hotels. At SO/SPA, set within stylish SO/Auckland, you’ll discover bespoke restorative treatments and seasonal packages that promise total mind-body relaxation.

Equal parts results-focused and sensorial, SO/SPA’s offerings include signature treatments by Waterlily and Comfort Zone. In typical SO style, these treatments include some that are unlike any you’ll find elsewhere. SO/SPA was the first spa in the world to offer Waterlily’s Vino Therapy Body Ritual. You read that right: vino, as in wine, and it’s paired with raw cocoa. We already knew shiraz and chocolate were a great match, but this treatment proves they are a powerhouse combo in more ways than one.

4. Aotea Great Barrier Island - Kaitoke Hot Springs

An easy walk along the edge of the Kaitoke Swamp leads you to one of Aotea Great Barrier Island’s greatest hidden gems.

These sulphurous natural hot springs are worth the 45-minute hike (and the necessary plane or boat trip over to the island). With a backdrop of idyllic native bush and a soundtrack of birdsong, Kaitoke Hot Springs are a pretty special steamy oasis that you can access for free.

If you’re hoping for a more peaceful soak, plan to get to the pools early to beat the crowds. Pack your swimwear, towel and a water bottle to stay hydrated. If you’re keen to add on a few more steps, just beyond the springs you’ll be rewarded with a pretty amazing lookout across the island.

5. Infinity Float (Botany)

There’s plenty that can be said about the healing and calming benefits of water, but Infinity Float takes it to new levels with floatation therapy.

Drifting in an isolation tank filled with Epsom salt water lets you shift into a deep state of relaxation through sensory deprivation. Free from distractions, stimulation and physical strain, your body and mind will surrender to total calm.

Regular floaters say they benefit from reduced stress, improved circulation and muscle recovery, better sleep and increased energy. And if nothing else, it’s a welcome opportunity to enjoy a totally tranquil retreat from the real world for up to 60 minutes.

6. Salt Cave Halotherapy & Wellness Centre

If floating isn't your thing, keep your clothes on and try a drier journey to deep relaxation. The Salt Cave Halotherapy & Wellness Centre on Auckland’s North Shore is pretty much exactly as it sounds — a calming, soothing, pink-hued space in which you’re surrounded by healing Himalayan rock salt.

Here, you can simply recline and enjoy 45 minutes of quiet, chilled out relaxation on one of the cave’s six loungers. Salt Cave Halotherapy dates back hundreds of years and is said to offer relief from respiratory ailments, skin conditions and help improve sleep and mood.

The aim is to clear out any toxins and impurities, while enjoying a multi-sensory experience that leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to step back out into the world with a renewed sense of calm.
