The diversity of Auckland’s landscape and rich cultural heritage means there are so many unique experiences to discover. From exploring volcanic islands to jumping off the city’s tallest structures, you’ll find no shortage of incredible things to do.

Here are eight must-try activities that showcase the very best of what Auckland uniquely has to offer.

1. Kayak to Rangitoto Island with Auckland Sea Kayaks

Paddle your way across the sparkling waters of Auckland Harbour to Rangitoto Island. This iconic island is known for its rugged lava fields and breathtaking panoramic views of the city skyline and Hauraki Gulf. Auckland Sea Kayaks take you on a guided crossing of the harbour before exploring the island’s unique landscape.

After an hour-long hike up to the summit, you can circle the crater's edge or venture into the nearby lava caves just 15 minutes away. For an even more memorable experience, opt for a sunset tour, where you can witness the stunning hues of the evening sky while paddling back under the stars.

2. Take a leap at AJ Hackett Bungy on the Auckland Harbour Bridge

Make it a holiday to remember with a bungy jump from Auckland’s iconic Harbour Bridge. Operated by AJ Hackett Bungy, this is the ultimate adrenaline-pumping experience for thrill-seekers. The jump offers incredible views of the harbour before you take the leap, safely free-falling towards the water below. If you're not quite ready for a full jump, you can try the bridge climb and take in the panoramic sights from the top of one of Auckland’s most famous landmarks.

3. Visit Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium

Auckland’s Kelly Tarlton’s Sea Life Aquarium is famous for its ‘Penguin Passport’ experience, which allows you to get up close with the aquarium’s king and gentoo penguins and see what life is like in the coldest place on earth. This behind-the-scenes tour takes you into the penguin enclosure where you can learn about these fascinating creatures, their habitat, and conservation efforts.

Kelly Tarlton’s is also home to more than 80 different aquatic species across 30 immersive exhibits, from sharks and rays to vibrant tropical fish. The aquarium is recognised for having the first curved aquarium tunnel in the world, offering an interactive, educational experience that’s perfect for families or anyone fascinated by the ocean.

4. Explore the harbour’s gems with Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari

Auckland’s waters are home to diverse marine life, and an Auckland Whale and Dolphin Safari offers the perfect chance to get up close with some of these magnificent inhabitants. Explore Group’s safari takes you into the heart of the Hauraki Gulf, where you’re likely to spot rare seabirds, pods of dolphins playing in the water and, if you're lucky, witness the awe-inspiring sight of whales breaching.

This safari is also an opportunity to learn more from marine researchers and expert crew about the marine environment and Auckland’s efforts around marine conservation. With large windows and expansive viewing decks, everyone gets a front-row seat to nature’s spectacular show.

5. Experience the Coast to Coast Walkway

The Coast to Coast Walkway offers a unique opportunity to discover the diversity of the Auckland region up close, as it winds through the city's natural and urban landscapes. Starting (or finishing, depending on your direction) at Te Wero Bridge in the vibrant Viaduct district of downtown Auckland, this hike makes its way across the isthmus to Taumanu Reserve in Onehunga. This 16km route reveals Auckland's communities, cultural heritage and volcanic history, with photo-worthy views from the summits of its iconic peaks.

The walk takes around five hours end to end, and along the way, you’ll traverse green spaces, quiet neighbourhoods, and bustling cityscapes. You’ll stroll through historic parks, past architectural landmarks - including the Auckland War Memorial Museum - and along hidden bush trails. Grab some comfy shoes, a water bottle and some sunscreen, and enjoy uncovering the real essence of Auckland.

6. Reach new heights at the Sky Tower

Auckland’s Sky Tower is one of the city’s most iconic structures, and it's much more than just a place for a great photo op. At 328 metres tall, it offers panoramic views that stretch across the city and beyond, making it the perfect spot to orient yourself in Auckland.

For the adventurous, SkyJump gives you the opportunity to leap off the tower for 11 seconds of pure adrenaline as you plunge 53 floors in a controlled base jump. Or, you can instead step out of your comfort zone with a SkyWalk. With no handrails (but a very secure harness) you can walk around the outside ring of New Zealand’s tallest tower, getting a true bird’s eye view of the city below.

Just as thrilling, but a little less extreme, the Skyslide is a virtual reality tour of the city’s skyline. Soar and slide down virtual glass tubes, all while safely strapped to a seat on the 51st floor.

7. Discover Piha, Auckland's black sand beach

Known for its dramatic landscapes, rugged cliffs, and powerful waves, Piha on Auckland’s west coast is one of New Zealand's most iconic beaches. Just an hour’s drive from Auckland’s city centre, its unique black sand, a result of volcanic activity, gives the beach an almost otherworldly appearance. Hike up Lion Rock for panoramic views of the coastline, try your hand at surfing in the wild Tasman Sea with a local surf school, explore nearby native rainforest in the Waitākere Ranges or simply enjoy a peaceful sunset.

Learn more about the region at Arataki Visitor Centre. It offers interesting information on the history and culture of the area, as well as guidance on numerous walking and hiking trails you can access nearby.

8. Explore Māori and Pacific culture at the Auckland War Memorial Museum

For a deep dive into Aotearoa New Zealand’s history and culture, visit the Auckland War Memorial Museum. Housed in a commanding heritage building and perched within tranquil Auckland Domain, the museum’s exhibits tell the story of New Zealand’s indigenous heritage and its connections to the wider Pacific, providing visitors with insight into the country’s cultural identity.

The Māori Cultural Experience takes you on an immersive journey into Māori culture through performance of traditional songs, dances, and the famous haka. It’s a meaningful experience that will enrich your understanding of Auckland’s roots and its place in the world.
