From thrilling adventures to relaxing escapes, here's your ultimate guide to making the most of a rainy day in Auckland. 

1. Explore Auckland’s entertainment hub, SkyCity

SkyCity is chocka with excitement and activities. Rugby fans will love the All Blacks Experience, a 45-minute interactive tour showing what it takes to be part of New Zealand’s national rugby union team. You can even test your own skills!

Or, for the film buffs, check out Wētā Workshop Unleashed. The award-winning, 90-minute movie-making tour takes you through interactive film sets. You’ll get hands-on with special effects, props, and characters centred on the genres of horror, fantasy, and sci-fi. 

End your day with dinner at Cassia, a much-loved modern Indian restaurant that reworks traditional dishes with New Zealand ingredients. 

If you’re 18 or over, pop to SkyBar for a drink. We love the aptly named ‘Oceanside’ cocktail, a colour-changing spectacle of a margarita! And don’t worry – you won’t go hungry. They’ve got grazing plates, sweet treats, and a late-night menu. 

2. Dive into the depths of the ocean at SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s

SEA LIFE Kelly Tarlton’s brings you face-to-face with marine life from New Zealand’s waters and beyond. Walk through the underwater tunnel, check out the penguins, and marvel at sharks. 

Make the most of your visit with their Penguin Passport experience, a 60-minute tour where you’ll go on the ice with keepers to meet the penguins up-close and learn how they’re taken care of. Feeling brave? Snorkel with sharks! The Shark Cage Adventure guarantees an underwater encounter with the majestic creatures.

Don’t miss White + Wong's for a delicious Asian fusion meal with epic views.

Head to Commercial Bay for a mix of international stores like H&M and Australasian favourites including ECOYA and Aotea Concept Store. There are plenty of delicious eateries inside, but for something extra special, taste modern Kiwi cuisine at Ahi

4. Delve into history at Auckland’s museums

Auckland War Memorial Museum is a must-visit in Auckland. You’ll learn about New Zealand’s natural history, military history, and Māori culture. Aptly perched in the Viaduct Harbour, the New Zealand Maritime Museum takes you on a journey through the country’s seafaring history. Its exhibitions are top-notch, and it’s hosts monthly free activities for children. 

Near Auckland Zoo in Western Springs, the Museum of Transport and Technology (MOTAT) showcases the history of transport and technology in New Zealand. It’s a fun and interactive museum that the kids will love!

For a more intimate experience, head to Studio One Toi Tū or the SO/Gallery. Studio One Toi Tū is a community-driven spot, hosting local exhibitions, workshops, and markets, while the SO/Gallery opens its doors every Thursday and Friday to showcase contemporary work.

6. Treat yourself to a spa day

Could a spa trip be the perfect escape from a rainy day? After your visit to SO/Auckland’s gallery, head to their spa for bespoke luxury in the city centre. You’ll start by picking a timeframe, then handpick individual treatments from their spa menu. 

Nearby, Sofitel Spa offers indulgent treatments like hot stone massages, body exfoliation, and radiant facials using the finest French and New Zealand cosmetics. The best bit? You'll get complimentary use of their fitness amenities, including a saltwater pool, steam room, sauna, and jacuzzi. 

7. Catch a movie at a cinema in Auckland

When you’re done shopping, head to Event Cinemas Newmarket, located on the fourth floor of Westfield Newmarket. The modern chain shows both mainstream and independent movies. For the ultimate experience, book a ‘Boutique’ seat and enjoy an artisanal in-cinema menu in a luxury setting. 

For quirky charm, check out The Capitol on Dominion Road. This century-old cinema is a favourite with Auckland’s film community, showing arthouse movies and upmarket commercial releases. Get there early to enjoy a drink, popcorn, and some lollies in the intimate, dimly lit seating area. 

Tucked underneath the Central City Library, Academy Cinemas offers a great selection of independent and international films. Grab a Garage Project craft beer, some popcorn and settle in for a show. Want in on a local tip? Tickets are only $5 every Wednesday. 

8. Explore the night sky at Stardome Observatory and Planetarium

The Stardome Observatory and Planetarium in Cornwall Park has been a place of astronomical adventure ever since it opened in 1967. Inside, you’ll find regular stargazing and planetarium shows that aren’t weather-dependent. The daytime schedule is aimed at younger children, while evening shows are geared towards older children and adults. 

From March through to November, book in advance to catch Sci-fi at Stardome. The event projects major sci-fi movies like Alien on the planetarium ceiling. In their own words, the Stardome Observatory and Planetarium is ‘the coolest little observatory this side of Neptune’. 

9. Hit the slopes at Snowplanet

Wrap up warm and head to Snowplanet! Just a short drive from the city, the indoor snow experience boasts 8000 square metres of powdery snow to explore on your skis or snowboard. First timer? Start at the beginners' slope or book a lesson – you'll be ski season ready in no time. 

Some important things to know before you go – helmets are compulsory (if you don’t have one, helmet hire costs $7), and bookings are recommended but not essential. 

10. Find your way out of an escape room or a maze

Rally your friends or family to solve puzzles and escape the room before time runs out! Step back into New Zealand's 1860s and 70s gold rush era in Thrillzone Escape Adventure Takapuna's indoor escape rooms. Choose between three missions based on real crimes, places, and people. Plus, you get free photos with every game.

Thrillzone in Takapuna also offers VR escape rooms, where you'll dive into magical worlds, escape the dragon tower, or investigate a haunted monastery. And while their city centre location only offers outdoor escape rooms, it’s good to know there’s another spot in the city for those sunny days.

For an totally unique sensory adventure, check out Odyssey Sensory Maze in the city centre. You'll journey through illusions, lights, sound effects, quirky obstacles, and strange sensations.

It’s fun for all ages and great for families, providing around 20 minutes of entertainment, though you can take your time to explore at your own pace. Odyssey is recommended for those aged 8 and over, but feel free to inquire about suitability for younger children.

11. Show off your putting skills at mini golf

Holey Moley is not your average mini golf course. It’s a multi-sensory labyrinth of quirky, themed holes set within a bar. Whether you’re navigating through shark-infested waters or pop culture references, each hole offers a new surprise. After your game, relax with a cocktail and a bite to eat from their extensive menu. 

Ever played mini golf in the dark? I know what you’re thinking. But Gloputt Mini Golf offers a glow-in-the-dark, family-friendly experience that’s fun for all ages. Glowing technicolour light illuminates this 16-hole indoor course to create an otherworldly atmosphere. 

12. Play a game of pool

Head over to Ponsonby Pool Hall, a local favourite where you can sink a few balls (or beers) in a cosy, laid-back setting. This spot has got it all – a licensed bar, friendly vibes, and plenty of tables. 

If you're in the city centre, check out Orange Pool Club. This joint offers multiple tables, a well-stocked bar, and a welcoming environment for pool players of all abilities. 

13. Try indoor rock climbing

If you're into bouldering, you probably already know about Boulder Co. Loved for its friendly community, on-site café, and fitness gym, it’s a fantastic spot to hone your strength and technique. Climbs are set for all skill levels, so whether you're a newbie or a seasoned climber, you'll find your groove here.

On the North Shore? Northern Rocks is an indoor bouldering gym that’s perfect for all abilities. With beginner-friendly routes and challenging overhangs, it’s a top spot to get your climb on. Plus, it's dog-friendly, so you can bring your furry friend along!

If you're a fan of heights, top-rope or lead climbing is for you. Head to Extreme Edge in Panmure, one of Auckland's largest indoor climbing facilities with walls up to 14 meters high and a dedicated bouldering section. 

14. Enjoy some friendly competition at a board game bar

Pull up a seat at Dice and Fork, your go-to spot for great food, craft beers, and an extensive library of over 300 board games. It’s the ideal place to gather your mates for some friendly competition. Feeling peckish? Their tacos are delicious!

15. Try a new restaurant

When the rain’s pouring, there’s no better time to indulge in some of Auckland's finest food and drink. Newly opened restaurant Rahi on Ponsonby Road serves up elevated Indian food. Their menu features curries, kebabs, small dishes and several desserts. 

Moments away, San Ray is quickly becoming a local staple for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Their all-day menu features breakfast options like crumpets and eggs, lunchtime dishes including a caesar salad, and evening mains including wagyu rib eye steak. You could spend the whole day here – literally.
