The FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™ surpassed expectations right from the incredible opening match between New Zealand and Norway at Eden Park, with several history making records being set in Auckland. Across the nine Auckland matches, 350,000 tickets were issued to fans, representing an average of 38,969 per match. The record crowd for a football match in Aotearoa New Zealand – women’s or men’s – was broken three times in Auckland and a capacity crowd of 43,217 was achieved for the final three matches played at Eden Park. There were also over 90,000 fan visits to the FIFA Fan Festival, which was open for the duration of the tournament at The Cloud on Queen’s Wharf and free for all ages.
YOUTH SYMPOSIUM
The Hine O Te Kura Youth Symposium helped spark a national conversation around changing the game on menstrual inequity. Content from the Symposium now has a permanent home with Sport New Zealand’s Flow On Effect series.
TREE PLANTING
Hundreds of volunteers from the local community planted 5,100 native trees at Puhinui Reserve, South Auckland to celebrate the unity of 32 nations represented in the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
