One of Auckland’s most majestic neo-Gothic churches sits prettily in the heart of the city, only a quick walk from the SkyCity precinct. The stately St Matthew-in-the-City, a stone Anglican church built in 1905, has long been considered a premier venue for churchgoers, gala dinners, classical concerts and more. Think stained glass windows, polished brass fixtures and kauri flooring – plus an incredible 3004-pipe organ towering over the main chancel.
Experience the grandeur of St Matthew’s inside its photogenic (and cavernous) nave, which boasts incredible vaulted stone ceilings. The church’s distinctive look, a medley of European and medieval styles, has turned this landmark venue into a popular setting for spiritual and secular events alike. Most recently St Matthew’s hosted a series of candlelight concerts spanning a wide range of music genres.
