Newmarket is exactly what its name suggests – a contemporary hub for shopping. Most of the shiny brick-and-mortars are situated along Broadway, its busy thoroughfare, with Westfield Newmarket at one end and the cobbled laneways of Teed Street at the other. Don’t panic, shoppers – you can easily walk from one end to the other.
Even a mall skeptic should consider a trip to the ultra-modern Westfield Newmarket mall. Like something out of the future, the two-building citadel rises five storeys, housing global luxury brands, high-street shops, department stores (including David Jones) and just about everything in-between. Cute Korean homewares or fresh-cut flowers? You betcha.
The shopping metropolis is somewhat arranged by price, with affordable wares in one complex and designer duds such as Balenciaga and Gucci encompassing an entire floor of the other. As if that weren’t enough, Westfield is also home to a seven-screen cinema complex, ten-pin bowling and arcade games at Archie Brothers Cirque Electriq and coin-operated karaoke booths. Huzzah!
For a more boutique vibe, head over to the cobbled laneways surrounding Teed and Osborne Streets. Peruse the small, gallery-like shopfronts to find New Zealander designers, leather goods, stylish streetwear and boutique gift shops. Fashion lovers will adore the selection, with popular brands including Ruby, Blak, Moochi, Saben and Gregory. Don’t miss the gorgeous Osborne Lane nearby for a small yet compact cobbled alleyway filled with homewares, beauty, fine jewellery and excellent eats.
The shopping doesn’t stop here. Storefronts along Broadway are equally as varied, with national retailers such as Freedom Furniture, Smith & Caughey’s and Nike to one-of-a-kind boutiques and specialty shops.
