Te Manurewa o Tamapahore (Manurewa), a major Auckland suburb, is named after an incident that occurred between two brothers. Simply put, both brothers were flying kites (Manutukutuku / manu). Tamapahore’s kite was flying higher than his brother’s. His brother was angered by this and released the cord to Tamapahore’s kite allowing it to float/elevate (rewa) to the east. This is how Manurewa got its name.
The Auckland Botanic Gardens is a major draw, with almost a million visitors per year. The gardens span over 64 hectares and offer a sensory experience with 9,000 plant species to admire. The adjacent Tōtara Park is one of the largest parks in the Auckland region, with a network of trails and playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, picnic areas, and pools.
Manurewa's town centre is a hive of activity with a proud community of nearly 100,000 people. The multicultural population is reflected in the Manurewa Market, held every Sunday, where visitors can enjoy freshly caught fish, seasonal veggies, sugar donuts, Chinese food, and live music. Nathan Homestead Pukepuke, a community arts centre, offers exhibitions, visual and performing arts classes and workshops for all ages, including pottery and contemporary jewellery-making.
For a peaceful coastal walkway, visit Puhinui Reserve, where you can enjoy views of the Manukau Harbour. For a swim or spa, head to the Manurewa Pool and Leisure Centre.
