Sink into a cushy red seat at the 1101-seat theatre in the Bruce Mason Centre, the large and lovely hub of the North Shore’s arts and entertainment scene. Like just about everything on “the Shore”, the Takapuna performance centre is a short walk from the beach and equally pumping dining scene.
Whether you're into rock n’ roll or want to entertain the kids, the Bruce Mason Centre wears a variety of entertaining hats. Grab a bite at one of the hip eateries nearby before a night in the tiered auditorium, fit for swaying to music or laughing out loud to comedy. Keep tabs on the artists and groups touring at the Auckland Live website, which has hosted a series of monthly ‘Morning Melodies’ band and brass concerts for 22 years and counting.
Built in 1996, the venue was named after one of New Zealand’s greatest playwrights Bruce Mason – look out for his writing desk and typewriter on display in the main foyer.
Getting there Te huarahi ki reira
Bruce Mason Centre is 15-20 minutes by car from the city centre, and easily accessible by bus. The closest paid parking is the Killarney Street car park, operated by Auckland Transport.
Local tip He tīwhiri mō te rohe
Leave plenty of spare time in case there’s traffic on the motorway or around the Takapuna village. Even better – get dinner or a pre-show drink nearby so you can soak up the bustling beachfront vibe.
