Standing in Northcote Point since 1927, this colourful arthouse cinema has seen it all – and not just in a film sense. Soon after opening, the Onewa Picture Drome was renamed to Palais at a time when parties and dances were held after film screenings. By the end of the 1930s, it was renamed to The Kings Theatre. The Bridgeway got its current name from a radio station competition, in celebration of the opening of the Auckland Harbour Bridge in 1959.
Step back to a time when there was only cinema in town, one that felt cosy and intimate. Its old-timey feel lends itself well to the range of arthouse films, mainstream flicks and special film events – there's something for everyone. The Bridgeway is a firm favourite for screening indie evens including the Italian Film Festival and French Film Festival. There are four cinemas in all, each small and housing a maximum of 18 seats in all.
Getting there Te huarahi ki reira
