On the edge of the biggest public square in the central city, sits the Aotea Centre. An impressive complex containing the country’s largest tiered auditorium, along with a state of the art theatre and plush function rooms.
This well-known landmark has been in-situ since the late 1980s, with several refurbishments over the years. Throughout the decades it has always played a vital role in the performing arts scene of Tāmaki Makaurau. Revered cultural institutions such as The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, the Royal New Zealand Ballet and national and international theatre companies all regularly perform under its roof.
And each year a range of acts from the International Comedy Festival and distinguished speakers from the Auckland Writers Festival also take up residence. So whether you’re looking to laugh, cry, be moved or mesmerised, it’s all on offer here.
Dining-wise, the Terrace Cafe, which opens out on Aotea Square, is a good spot to meet for a bistro meal or a pre-show coffee or drink. With festivals and events regularly taking place in the Square, there’s often lots to see here, aside from the show you’ve come for.
Alternatively, mingle in the atrium outside the theatre doors and enjoy the pre-show buzz with a glass of wine or an ice cream, while admiring some of the country’s best artworks which adorn the walls of the centre.
Getting there Te huarahi ki reira
The Aotea Centre is a short walk up Queen Street from Britomart station, and the Civic car park is conveniently located beside the venue if you’re driving.
Local tip He tīwhiri mō te rohe
Check out the sculpture of celebrated Kiwi opera singer Dame Kiri Te Kanawa which sits on Level 3 of the Aotea Centre. It was created by local artist Terry Stringer and unveiled by Dame Kiri Te Kanawa herself when the auditorium was named in her honour in 2019.
