Josh & Helen's TopPlaces to Visit in AucklandJosh and Helen Emett run three of Auckland's top restaurants: Gilt Brasserie and Onslow in the heart of the city, and The Oyster Inn on Waiheke Island. From bustling midtown to Waiheke’s relaxed charm, Auckland is their happy place—come explore their favourite spots.
Everyone needs a good book, and Unity Books is the perfect place to find one. Helen and I love visiting, especially before holidays or summer, to stock up on reading material. Half the fun is browsing—exploring different genres, sampling a few pages, and finding unexpected gems. Some of our best reads have come from these browsing sessions.
This boutique wine and liquor store is ideal for keeping your drinks cabinet well-stocked. Just down the street from Gilt, it’s our go-to for a last-minute bottle of wine or a top-shelf spirit. The team is incredibly knowledgeable, and their recommendations never miss. If you’re looking for something rare, chances are you’ll find it here.
If you haven’t discovered this Vulcan Lane gem, make sure to check it out. Sherry has an incredible selection of sunglasses you won’t find anywhere else in New Zealand. Helen bought me a pair for Christmas last year, and they’re my favourite pair. It’s the perfect spot for unique eyewear.
Right across the road from us at Gilt on O’Connell Street, Rumours Coffee is my go-to for a caffeine fix. The team is awesome—we often watch them through Gilt’s windows as they make coffee from morning until afternoon. We’re both just typical flat white kind of people, but they also serve excellent pour-overs and single-origin options worth trying.
If you haven't played a round at Waiheke Golf Course, make sure to add it to your next weekend itinerary on the island. It's a classic New Zealand country course with a charming clubhouse. I love teeing off at 7 a.m.—the sun rising, a light frost on the greens—it's perfect. When I play with the boys, I usually have to drag them out of bed, but they love it too! The golf course is definitely my happy place.
